Dear Major League Parents,

The season is quickly approaching and there are just a few open spots remaining in the Major League.  Please let your friends know they need to sign up their player ASAP so they don't miss out on the Spring season.  Register Here.

Evals: Evaluations are scheduled for this Saturday, January 26 on Field 1 at Medlock. The current forecast looks like it will be cold, so make sure your player is appropriately dressed.  Players are assigned a time slot based on last names.

Times are as follows with last name beginning with:

A-C  10:00am-11:30am

D-I  11:45am-1:15pm

J-P  1:30pm-3pm

Q-Z  3:15pm-4:45pm

Please make every effort to make your time, as we have them divided fairly evenly and want to keep the day moving.  If you absolutely cannot make your time slot on Saturday, YOU MUST EMAIL ME to request a change in time.  If that cannot be accommodated, make-up evaluations are on Monday, January 28 at 6:30 p.m. on Field 1 at Medlock.  It is incredibly important for your player to be at evaluations.  We work very hard to balance teams, and, with the split between National League and American League, we need as much information as possible on each player to make sure they are in the appropriate league.

Please arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled time at the registration table which will be set up on the 1st base side of Field 1, by the pool.  Each player will receive a number/name badge.  It's also very helpful if they wear a jersey that has their name on the back.  Go ahead and have your player warmed up (especially their arms) before their scheduled time.  This includes hitting - they'll have a few practice swings on deck but that's it.  EXPECT TO BE THERE THE FULL 90 MINUTES.  We will break the players into 4 groups where they will be evaluated on hitting, pitching, running, fielding, throwing and catching.  All players will remain at each individual station until all players in their group have finished and then they will rotate together as a group.

Bats:  Beginning January 1, 2018, USA Baseball implemented a new method for measuring bat performance in the testing of youth baseball bats.  The "USA Bat Standard" creates wood-like performance in youth baseball bats. The new bat rules now apply to DHYS and therefore the USSSA 1.15 BPF bats are no longer allowed.  Wooden bats and bats with the USA Bat stamp are the only bats that will be allowed during evaluations and game play.  USA Baseball bat stamp

Other Equipment:  DHYS provides players with a hat, belt, socks and a jersey.  Pants, gloves and cleats are not provided.  Players also need to have their own helmet and USA/wooden bat as well.  All male players should (but are not required to) wear a cup at this age in practices and games.  Facemasks are NOT required at the Major League level.  As an alternative, some parents elect (but are not required) to purchase a C Flap and attach to player helmets.  Link to C Flap on Amazon.

Since we have a new bat standard, it is likely that some players will not have their own approved bat.  Players may need to borrow their teammates bats if they cannot provide their own approved bat.  Dick’s Sporting Goods (there will be a DHYS discount day in the near future) and Play It Again Sports are good places to look for bats (make sure it has the USA baseball stamp), helmets and gloves if needed.

Timing/Schedule (Link to full Spring calendar on DHYS website):

Player drafts will take place as soon as possible after the evaluations, with practices starting no later than the week of February 11.  When your player is drafted you will receive a welcome email from your coach within 48 hours after the draft.  Please don't email us asking about team assignments unless you haven't heard anything by February 9.

Spring season consists of 2 or 3 activities per week.  Prior to the first Grapefruit (pre-season) game, both activities will be practices - one during the week and another on Sunday.  Once Grapefruit games begin on March 3, activities will consist of 1 practice during the week, a game on Saturday and 1 practice on Sunday.  Once the Regular Season games start (week of March 18) you will have a weekday game (Monday-Thursday), a Saturday game and a Sunday practice.

Players in both Middle School and Major:

There are many Major players that also play for their Middle School or one of DHYS' In Park Middle School teams.  There is only about a 3-week overlap between seasons.  Major rules are set up to support participation on their Middle School teams.  If there is a game time conflict, players should play with their Middle School.  If there is a game time overlap, players can arrive at a Major game late, or leave a Major game early, with no penalty to their Major team.  If you know the days and times of your Middle School practices, PLEASE make sure it is reflected as a conflict in your player's registration.  (To edit and add to your player registration, log in to the website and click through Registration again where you can add practice night conflict.  Please add "Middle School practice" with times in the conflict description).  This will greatly help coaches when selecting practice times at player drafts.

Field Day:

Please go ahead and put Saturday, February 16th on your calendar.  That is our Spring Field Day, where we as volunteers work to get the park ready for Spring season.  As an all-volunteer organization, it is important to have parent participation, and it's a great way to fulfill the 3 hours of volunteer service that you agreed to at registration.  With the damage from the flood a month ago, and lots of rain since, there is plenty of work that needs to be done.  And with this being the first weekend of Winter Break, please come if you are in town, even if you can just come for an hour.

Let us know if you have any questions and looking forward to a great Spring season!
